The newly elected leadership of the Sofia chapter of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) Thursday elected its executive bureau and decided that its head, Diana Tonova, should take the helm of the BSP group in the Sofia Municipal Council, replacing Ivan Takov. The group refused to comply.
BSP is represented in the Municipal Council in Sofia in a coalition with other parties, called BSP for Bulgaria Local Coalition.
The group members put out a statement where they reject the decision of the local chapter leadership to replace Takov and voice concern over "the interference of the Socialist party leadership in the group decision". They argue that such interference undermined the standing of the municipal councilors from the local coalition, the local BSP chapter and BSP itself.
The new local leadership of the Socialist party was elected to replace the one headed by Takov over a rift with the central party leadership.
