Close to 52,000 farmers will receive BGN 300 million of the State aid for farmers in relation to Russia's war against Ukraine by 15 May 2024. "The State, in the face of the caretaker Government, has restored the dialogue with the sector," said Georgi Stoyanov, chairman of the Bulgarian Farmers Union, quoted by his Union in a press release Thursday.
"It is indicative that caretaker Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev and the Minister of Agriculture and Food, Georgi Tahov, met first with the farmers and put the sector among the priorities in the Bulgarian economy, Stoyanov stressed. "They did not divide us and put the whole sector on one table, as is done in developed democracies," Georgi Stoyanov said. Representatives of more than 50 branch organisations from the agriculture sector took part in the talks.
The Ukrainian aid funds were to be disbursed by 22 April. They were agreed at the beginning of the year with the Denkov cabinet following yet another round of protests. In March came the approval from Brussels for two schemes - aid for producers of fruit, vegetables, livestock breeders, etc. for BGN 170 million and aid for grain producers for BGN 120 million.
Already when the state budget for 2024 was adopted, there was tension in the agricultural sector because funds for the so-called Ukrainian aid were not provided for in it. However, until 9 April the Agriculture Fund was accepting applications and over 50 thousand farmers applied for the aid.
