Talking with young people and students at Sofia University on Tuesday, outgoing Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov said that the government’s priority is the European democratic development of Bulgaria.

In front of a packed hall, Denkov said that Bulgaria, for all its problems, is a democratic country and should not allow "anyone to be tempted to turn it into a dictatorship".

He spoke about his recent visit to Ukraine and Tuesday’s visit of Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya to Bulgaria. Two developed European countries fighting for their freedom; one is being invaded, and the other ruled by a dictator, Denkov said.

The outgoing Prime Minister outlined "the inability of the justice system to deliver justice" as the main problem and commented on the need for reforms.

"Changing the constitution is a necessary but insufficient condition. The risk before us is that this path will be interrupted," Denkov said.

Bulgaria's membership in Schengen, the eurozone and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development were also among the priorities of the government that Denkov outlined to the audience. Through them, the best standards the world knows are being set, he said.

The event at Sofia University aims to raise young people’s interest and awareness on key issues related to state governance.

It is jointly organised by the National Youth Forum, the Students' Club of Political Science, the International Relations Research Student Association, the European Studies Club, the Active Policies Club and the Student’s Diplomatic Club, with the assistance of the Sofia University Student Council.
