Bulgaria’s Defence Minister Todor Tagarev conferred with the UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, David Cameron, here on Wednesday, Tagarev’s Ministry said. The meeting was part of a series of meetings Lord Cameron held with the Bulgarian Government during his first visit to this country after taking office.
The main topics of discussion included bilateral cooperation in defence, the current security agenda in the Black Sea region, the latest developments in the Russia-Ukraine war, UK and Bulgaria’s assistance to Ukraine, the risks and threats to security in Europe, and possible counteractive efforts at the union level.
Matters related to the future of NATO were also discussed in light of the 75th anniversary of NATO and the 20th anniversary of Bulgaria's accession to the Alliance.
Lord Cameron praised bilateral defence relations, underscoring the UK's support for Bulgaria, a highly valued NATO ally. He highlighted the UK's concern about the war in Ukraine and its strong support for measures to strengthen deterrence and defence capabilities across NATO's eastern flank.
Bulgaria's Chief of Defence, Admiral Emil Eftimov, Deputy Minister of Defence Atanas Zapryanov and the UK's Ambassador to Bulgaria Rob Dixon also participated in Wednesday's meeting.
