Health Minister Hristo Hinkov said here Thursday that he won't be staying in the Government after the rotation expected in March. "I feel I don't have political support," he told reporters on his way into a sitting of the Parliamentary Health Committee.

He said the last straw was an audit at the Pirogov emergency hospital in Sofia which he had ordered and which found in late 2023 a number of violations. The hospital director dismissed the findings but was sacked by Hinkov - but then a court put on halt the replacement and the Parliamentary Health Committee asked that the director keep his job until all competent bodies decide on the matter.

Hinkov told reporters on Thursday: "I told Democrats for Strong Bulgaria [of the Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria coalition] that I don't have political support and because the political configuration in the political majority will change [with the rotation], and it was exactly this majority that challenged my managerial decision, I knew that I should withdraw after the rotation. The roots of the problem were a long time ago with minor administrative misunderstandings which could be overcome. But the Pirogov case made it clear that I would not be able to adequately manage a system that needs reform."
