If they are not granted full Schengen accession in due time, Bulgaria and Romania should abolish the border between them, according to MEP Andrei Novakov (European People's Party). In a comment for the press, he said that the issue of Bulgaria and Romania's Schengen bids being separated is not on the agenda.
"We should not accept any partial proposals, especially if they don't go with deadlines," Novakov said of Austria's idea for allowing Bulgaria and Romania into Schengen for air travel only.
"Our country has become hostage to domestic political battles in Austria and the Netherlands," said Novakov.
According to the MEP, Bulgaria is gathering support from all other countries and he does not expect "the stubbornness demonstrated in the Netherlands and Austria to last much longer".
