National Assembly Chair Rosen Zhelyazkov and MPs attended the memorial service in memory of those who died during the Holodomor in Ukraine, which was held in the St. Nedelya Church [Holy Sunday Church] in Sofia, Parliament's press service reported here on Friday. The commemorative event was organized by the Embassy of Ukraine in Bulgaria and the Mati Ukraina Association of Ukrainian Organizations in Bulgaria, on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the genocide against the Ukrainian people.

"We are here to pray for the souls of those who lost their lives 90 years ago, "noted Rosen Zhelyazkov. He pointed out that after the Second World War there was hope that people had learned their lessons and that lasting peace was possible. Unfortunately, Russia's unprovoked aggression against Ukraine has disproved this, not only taking human lives, but also violates the basic understandings of the modern civilized world, he stressed.

"Today, when we offer prayers for the memory and souls of millions of people who lost their lives as a result of a misanthropic Soviet, communist regime, we cannot help but rebuke authoritarianism, totalitarianism, which finds ground and supporters, and pits itself Christian, Orthodox nations against each other," noted Zhelyazkov.

"We have taken a clear and decisive position in support of our fraternal, Christian and Orthodox Ukrainian people and we will help them in every way until they need us," added the National Assembly Chair.
