European Chief Prosecutor Laura Kovesi, who spoke at the Anti-Corruption, Democratic Resilience and Economic Security Forum here on Thursday, said that the impact of the scale of financial abuse on the public has been ignored for many years. The forum is organized by the Center for the Study of Democracy.

Kovesi said that serious VAT-related crimes are financed by various other more serious criminal activities, which is why fighting financial crimes impacts serious criminal groups.

The European Prosecutor General said that the fight against corruption is about convincing the public how corruption affects their lives.

According to Kovesi, corruption continues to be tolerated to a large extent everywhere, and there is no country that is immune to it. Corruption can very often become a matter of life and death, Kovesi noted. She said the public should be educated on anti-corruption.

Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov and Lilyana Pavlova, former Vice President of the European Investment Bank, are also participants in the event. Guests at the event include Minister of Justice Atanas Slavov, Minister of Interior Kalin Stoyanov, Interior Ministry Secretary General Zhivko Kotsev, Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev, representatives of the Bulgarian office of the European Public Prosecutor's Office.
