A senior police officer of the Sredets Border Police Station was admitted to a hospital with a gunshot wound following an incident involving detention of migrants near the border with Turkiye. "The police officer is in good condition," General Directorate of Border Police Director Chief Commissioner Anton Zlatanov said Friday at a news briefing in the southeastern town of Sredets.

The incident took place early in the morning on Thursday. Zlatanov said that it involved six migrants who had crossed the border illegally. Following a tip-off, border guards launched a manhunt and caught the trail of the migrants thanks to a police dog. The police officers gave several warning commands. The migrants dispersed in different directions into the forest. One of the police officers fired warning shots. She was holding the police dog's leash in one hand and a weapon in the other. While waiting for her colleagues to take up their positions, she was hit by one of the migrants. Falling on her back, she produced a shot that hit her leg.

Zlatanov said that the woman is feeling well and expressed appreciation to the doctors who take care of her at the hospital. He awarded all ten border guards involved in the operation with cash prizes for their professionalism.
