President, Defence Minister Attend Initial Commissioning Ceremony of Military Medics

A solemn initial commissioning ceremony took place at the Military Medical Academy (MMA) in Sofia on Saturday. Seventeen young men and women from the first class of military doctors who have completed their full six-year course of training in Armed Forces medical support were promoted to the rank of lieutenant. The training was carried out under a tripartite programme of the MMA, Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy, and Varna Medical University, the MMA reported to BTA.

"The initial commissioning is above all a responsibility, which will measured every day by the health and lives of the people in the army and the citizens of the Republic of Bulgaria and by your dedication to your country," President Rumen Radev said in his welcoming address at the MMA. The ceremony was also attended by Defence Minister Todor Tagarev and Chief of Defence Emil Eftimov.

During the ceremony, Radev received the honorary formation and handed over a diploma and shoulder boards to the top-of-the-class cadet.

"Today is a remarkable day. On this day we demonstrate that three established institutions, the Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy, Varna Medical University, and the Military Medical Academy, have jointly managed to lay the foundations of this day when military medics with both military and medical training graduate," Tagarev said in his speech.

The Defence Minister noted that many people in this country are unaware that Bulgarian military medical personnel have taken part in international operations.
