Union of Bulgarian Journalists (UBJ) Secretary General Snezhana Todorova responded to an August 7 statement by Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov in connection with the work of the Council for Electronic Media (CEM). After Denkov commented that CEM “is not doing its job” and its chair is inadequate Todorova said the following: „This is a blatant and unacceptable interference by the executive in the work of an independent regulator, which is not responsible for sanctioning opinions.”

Todorova adds that Denkov has shown drastic incompetence of the rights, the purpose and the difference in the activities of CEM and the ethics commission with the National Council for Journalistic Ethics Foundation.

Todorova says that the UBJ supports the Council in its argument that the members of the executive and legislative powers should change their attitude with regards to the independents of the media regulator and all media in the country.

The UBJ Secretary General comments on Denkov’s response to a CEM position. According to her, the tone is similarly unacceptable.
