Speaking on Darik Radio on Saturday, Justice Minister Atanas Slavov said that the incomplete and formalistic approach to the investigation of a domestic violence case in Stara Zagora and the lack of a comprehensive assessment of the nature of the tragedy and empathy have caused the recent public outcry. Slavov voiced dismay as how a grave case like this one has been omitted from the local police bulletin.

A working meeting with Interior Minister Kalin Stoyanov discussed ways to improve the investigation of cases of domestic violence from the very start with the provision of free legal aid, quick access to medical establishments and to psychological support.

At a separate meeting with interim Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov it emerged that in the coming weeks instructions will be issued to prosecutors in relation with the investigation of cases of domestic violence so that they won't be underestimated.

Of changes to the Constitution and criticism by the head of State, the Minister said that the bill has been drawn up by experts of undisputed competence and has been discussed with members of the judiciary and the public. Slavov recalled that three years ago the President launched consultations and a bill to amend the Constitution has been drawn up. Slavov voiced hope that this bill will be tabled, and the President will show that in addition to attempting to oppose the Parliament at any cost, he is ready to take part in debate about Bulgaria and the future of the institutions.
