Work is progressing on the construction of a high-speed railway line connecting the Turkish towns of Cerkezkoy and Kapikule. The 153 km long section is scheduled to be completed and operational next year, said AK Party’s deputy Fatma Aksal at a press conference.

According to her, with the completion of this last stage, the high-speed railway that will connect Istanbul with the Kapikule border crossing on the Turkish-Bulgarian border will be fully completed.

"The high-speed railway line, which starts from Istanbul's central railway station and reaches Kapikule, will reduce the travel time for passenger trains from 3.5 hours to 1.35 hours and for freight trains from 8 hours to 3.5 hours. The implementation of the project started in 2019," she said.

The Istanbul-Kapikule railway project will include a high-speed train line that will connect Kapikule-Catalca with Istanbul International Airport. From there, via a third bridge, the airport will have a connection to the capital Ankara via the North Marmara railway, the Ihlas Haber news agency noted.

The media outlet also informed that the construction of a viaduct is nearing completion in the city of Edirne, which is being built along the Tundzha River and will be 680 metres long.
