The Vidin Regional Prosecution Office convicted a Turkish citizen for illegally carrying a very large sum across the border. He was sentenced to six months in prison with a three-year probation period and a fine of BGN 71,616.24, the Appellate Prosecution Office in Sofia said on Monday.

On September 15, the Turkish citizen entered Bulgaria from Romania at the Danube Bridge 2 border checkpoint between Vidin and Calafat. The driver did not declare any particularly large sum of money as required. He was carrying GBP 154,660, equivalent to BGN 358,081 hidden in the door of the vehicle.

In the course of the pre-trial proceedings, a plea bargain agreement was reached, whereby the accused agreed to the punishment provided for by law. The court has approved the agreement, the Prosecution Office said.
