Romania is in the grips of cold and snow. Three counties in the southeast (Braila, Buzau and Ialomita) are under orange alert for dangerous weather on Tuesday, the Romanian Internal Affairs Ministry said.
Wind speeds in those areas surpass 85 km/h. Heavy snow has closed five sections of national roads and 26 sections of county roads to traffic. Power outages have been reported in 11 settlements in the counties of Braila and Galati.
The Black Sea ports of Midia, Constanta and Mangalia are closed due to strong wind.
Classes have been suspended in several counties because of bad weather. Physical classes have been called off in the eastern counties of Bacau, Botosani, Braila, Buzau, Galati, Iasi, Neamt and Suceava.
The cold spell in Romania will continue in the coming days, with temperatures expected to fall to minus 20 C in some places. On Tuesday morning, the temperature in the national capital Bucharest was minus 1 C. Fine wet snow has been falling in the city since Monday.
Between Monday morning and Tuesday morning, police salvaged 190 stranded cars carrying about 400 people, the Internal Affairs Ministry reported. Ministry employees intervened in 1,701 emergencies.
