Court Rejects Request
for Bulgarian Border Police Officers
to Stand Trial in Turkey

Bourgas, on the Black Sea, November 9 (BTA) - The court in Bourgas did not grant a request for four Bulgarian border police officers to appear before the court in Turkey. The letter of request has been submitted by 1st High Criminal Court in Kirklareli.

The four border police have been charged with the 2008 death of a Turkish fisherman who was poaching in Bulgarian waters.

The court reasoned that a new trial would encroach on Bulgaria's sovereignty and that the statute of limitations has expired. Also a legal principle that a person canТt be tried twice for the same crime would be violated.

The court's ruling is final and is not subject to appeal.

The trial in Turkey is scheduled for March 12. LI/PP
