Socialists Move to Launch Procedure
for Election of New
Central Election Commission Members

Sofia, February 6 (BTA) - BSP for Bulgaria on Wednesday filed a draft proposal to open a procedure for the election of new members of the Central Election Commission, Deputy Floor Leader Kroum Zarkov told journalists in Parliament.

Zarkov said: "In response to our announcement yesterday GERB gave unacceptable and outrageous explanations as to how Parliament may bypass the law but we will resist that."

He said that under Article 51 of the Election Code members of the Central Election Commission are elected for a period of five years and a new lineup should be elected not earlier than three months and not later than one month from the end of the commission's term in office. The current members assumed office on March 21 2014 and under the law the new members should be elected before February 21 2019, said Zarkov.

According to him, GERB's explanation that the current lineup is experienced does not cancel the provisions of the law and won't be accepted by BSP.

"We''ll insist that next week the draft proposal is included on Parliament's agenda and within two days that parliamentary legal affairs committee will draw up the procedural rules for the election of new CEC members," said Zarkov. LI/PP
