Bulgaria's Olympic champion Karlos Nasar has been nominated for Best European Weightlifter of 2024 in a poll organized by the European Weightlifting Federation and the European section of the International Sports Press Association. The award winner will be named at the opening of the European Weightlifting Championships in Chisinau next month.
In addition to Nasar, who won the Olympic, world and European men's weightlifting titles in the 89 kg weight class in 2024, the list of nominees includes nine other athletes. These are three-times Olympic champion Lasha Talakhadze (Georgia), Dadash Dadashbayli (Azerbaijan), Roberto Gutu (Germany), Marin Robu (Moldova), Yusuf Fehmi Genc (Turkiye), Varazdat Lalayan (Armenia), Oscar Reyes Martinez (Italy), Marcos Ruiz Velasco (Spain) and Yauheni Tsikhantsou (Belarus).
Since its establishment in 2021, the annual European award has invariably been conferred on Lasha Talakhadze, who, in addition to his three Olympic titles in the highest weight class, also boasts seven world and seven European titles.
In December, Nasar was voted the best weightlifter in the world in 2024.
