The number of people receiving disability pensions increased by 30% in 2024 compared to a year earlier, according to data from the National Social Security Institute published on Monday.

The total number of individuals with pensions from the Public Social Insurance scheme is 109,613. Around 40,000 of them were granted disability pensions due to general illness, which amounts to 40.9% of all pension entitlements in 2024. That share in 2023 was 34.9%.

Reduced working capacity of more than 90% was established in 6,131 people, a 19% increase from the previous year. Another 10,357 people, a 29.4% increase from 2023, had a disability established to be between 71% and 90%. Further 23,216 people, an increase of 33.7%, had a disability established to be between 50% and 71%.

The National Social Security Institute said occupational accidents in Bulgaria increased by 114 in 2024 compared to 2023, but those with a fatal outcome decreased by a quarter.
