The situation near the Romanian town of Comarnic, Prahova County, at the southern foothills of the Carpathian Mountains (on European route E60), is under control, the county’s Inspectorate for Emergency Situations informed BTA on Monday. Earlier in the day traffic on the DN1 highway (Bucharest-Oradea) in the area was blocked due to a sulfuric acid leak from a tank truck. A malfunction in the main valve is the most probable cause of the incident.
Traffic is still diverted via alternative routes but there is no danger any longer. Measurements have been taken and there’s no leakage of hazardous substances. A sand dyke has been additionally built to prevent and absorb any possible leaks.
“The procedure for the transfer of the sulfuric acid from the faulty tank truck into another, suitable truck has just ended. The securing of the perimeter is underway and almost completed, so that we can urgently restore road traffic. Representatives of the National Environmental Guard are presently on site. A total of 28 people were evacuated from the area – 22 adults and 6 children. As soon as possible, probably after the completion of the cleaning operation, they will be able to return to their homes,” Prahova County Prefect Emil Draganescu told Digi24.
