Asked if the Central Election Commission (CEC) should resign, GERB leader Boyko Borissov told journalists in the National Assembly on Wednesday that the situation is so chaotic that he no longer knows who is right, and sees nothing transparent in the whole thing.

On Tuesday, MRF-New Beginning called for the immediate resignation of all CEC members. CEC is one of the key players in a recount of the votes cast in the October 2024 parliamentary elections. Last November, the Constitutional Court was approached by several parties challenging the legitimacy of the elections. The Court ordered a recount of the votes cast in 17% of the voting sections. In February 2025, the Constitutional Court tasked CEC with carrying out a nationwide recalculation of the actual votes cast for the parties and coalitions. In turn, CEC asked Information Services to enter the relevant data and make the calculations as required by the Court.

Borissov said the time to cancel the elections was five months ago, before the GERB-led coalition government was formed. He noted that the recent controversies, including demonstrations near Borissov’s house on Tuesday night, were happening at a time when the Cabinet had asked the European Commission for a convergence report for its entry in the eurozone.

On Tuesday, citizens gathered opposite the Parliament building for a protest march which followed a route from central Sofia to Bankya where Borissov lives. The organizers said they were discontent with the election manipulations.
