95% of All Traffic Accidents
in Bulgaria Caused
by Human Error

Sofia, May 21 (BTA) - There are close to 2.5 million active drivers in Bulgaria and the human factor is among the leading causes of traffic accidents, according to a national survey. This is why it is very important to study the different groups of drivers, the main mistakes they make on the road and what has lead to them, the head of the State Agency for Road Safety, Malina Kroumova, said here on Tuesday at the official presentation of SDIndex's annual Safe Drive Index, as quoted by her Agency.

The national survey aims to introduce a national index defining the risks in the Bulgarian drivers' behaviour.

According to the index's data for 2018, 95 per cent of all traffic accidents in Bulgaria were caused by human error. According to Kroumova, it is crucial to examine the issue of road safety in a comprehensive manner and analyse all elements, including drivers, vehicles and road infrastructure. She noted that her Agency is currently drafting a detailed analysis on the condition of road safety in Bulgaria.

The SDIndex is a summarized self-assessment of drivers' behaviour and reactions during routine and high-risk situations, which represents Bulgarian drivers between the ages of 18 and 75. This year's index includes new elements, the most important one being a special module for studying the risks among bus and lorry drivers.

The presentation was also attended by Deputy Transport Minister Angel Popov, Automobile Administration Executive Agency deputy head Damyan Voynovski, and Traffic Police Commissioner Rossen Rapchev. IG/MY
