20-km Sanitary Zone Determined for
All Industrial Pig-breeding
Farms

Sofia, July 29 (BTA) - Twenty-kilometre sanitary zones are determined for all industrial pig-breeding farms in Bulgaria, Agriculture, Food and Forestry Minister Dessislava Taneva said on Monday, emerging from a meeting of the Central Epizootic Council with the government in the wake of more hotspots of African Swine Fever (ASF).

There are 65 registered industrial pig-breeding farms in Bulgaria. ASF hotspots have been established in three of them.

No back-yard pig breeding will be allowed in the 20-km sanitary zones, Taneva said.

Slaughter houses are to carry out their work in the presence of a veterinary and the military police. The measure is introduced so as not to allow slaughtering of back-yard-grown pigs from facilities without the proper level of biological security. There are 110 registered slaughter houses in Bulgaria, 67 of which for slaughtering of pigs.

The measures decided at Monday's meeting become effective immediately.

Taneva recalled that a decision was made on Friday requiring that all relevant persons determine sites for burying of carcasses of culled pigs. These will be checked, she said.

Deputy Prime Minister Tomislav Donchev assured that the State has put in place all necessary measures to contain the spread of the disease. Donchev urged people to assist the authorities. LY/ZH
