Under the supervision of the District Prosecutor's Office - Vidin, an investigation is being conducted under the Vidin (on the Danube) regional prosecutor's office for illegal transportation of a large sum of money across the country's border, the Appellate Prosecutor's Office - Sofia said here on Tuesday.

A car driven by a Polish citizen into Bulgaria from Romania was pulled over in the area of the Danube Bridge Vidin - Calafat checkpoint. 

During the inspection carried out by the customs officers, packages containing euro banknotes were found under the carpet of the two front seats, in the cavity of the armrest of the rear seat and in a food bag.

The money, wrapped like sandwiches in aluminum foil and black stretch wrap, totaled EUR 238,200.

Pre-trial proceedings have been initiated. 

The driver, who has been remanded in custody, has also been charged with failure to comply with the obligation to declare cash in particularly large amounts carried across the border.
