The most successful formula would be a government of experts equally distanced from all political parties but with clear political support behind it, BSP-United Left coalition leader Atanas Zafirov said on Nova News TV on Saturday.

Zafirov argued that the Bulgarian political system is in a state of collapse. “The right wing is falling apart, the left wing has contracted, and we see many populist parties around. To restore the coordinate system, the right wing should be pieced back together, and the left wing should expand. Until these processes are completed, we continue to believe that the most successful formula would be an expert government.”

Interviewed by Bulgaria ON AIR television, MP Petya Tsankova of BSP-United Left said the leading positions of power should be taken by experts. She said it is not a coincidence that constitutional law expert Natalia Kiselova is the coalition’s candidate for National Assembly Chair. The Left would support only an expert cabinet, Tsankova stressed. “There is no way we can support a government of political figures, the less so people from GERB,” the lawmaker added.

She refuted GERB leader Boyko Borissov’s statement that his party and BSP-United Left discussed support for a future cabinet during their meeting earlier in the week. “The participants in the discussion reached consensus to postpone the liberalization of the electricity market for household consumers by two years. As far as support for a cabinet is concerned, this is the responsibility of the first and the second largest political forces. There are enough right-wing entities in this parliament,” Tsankova said.

She expressed hope that a regular government will be formed, because holding early parliamentary elections for the eighth time in less than four years would be a disaster.
