site.btaExpert Simeon Nguyen: AI, the Virtual Teacher Transforming Education
Schools can use artificial intelligence (AI) as a virtual teacher, Director of Cyber360 Academy Simeon Nguyen told BTA on Monday. Nguyen is also a lecturer for a course at Varna Free University.
Chatbots for Learning Support
Nguyen highlighted that schools can develop chatbots to assist students with questions outside of class. "Often, classroom explanations can be complex, or students may feel uneasy asking their teachers questions. A chatbot would make things much easier." He shared that he personally uses AI to simplify complex concepts.
Overcoming Skepticism in Schools
Many principals remain skeptical about AI in education, but Nguyen believes this will change once schools adopting AI see productivity improvements and better student results. Teachers, too, are hesitant due to a lack of understanding, but Nguyen emphasized that AI can save time by handling administrative tasks, allowing teachers to focus on essential duties. “With AI, teachers can create interactive materials, lesson plans, tests, and more,” he explained.
AI vs. Student Misuse
Nguyen noted that schools face challenges as students use AI for writing assignments. However, detection systems are improving. He believes AI could be a powerful educational tool for teachers as well, even assisting in early education. “AI can also assist teachers in kindergartens,” Nguyen said, adding that it can generate simple games or stories tailored to specific learning needs.
AI is a Supplement, Not a Replacement
"AI is a supplementary tool, not something to replace teachers," Nguyen said. He emphasized the need for students to be trained in balancing AI use with personal knowledge and skills.
Cybersecurity Risks and AI as a Defender
Nguyen also warned about the cybersecurity risks posed by AI. He noted that malicious entities use AI for phishing and creating viruses, but AI systems are also being developed to detect and counter these attacks. "AI assists both sides, and artificial intelligences are already battling each other," he explained, urging caution regarding digital threats.
Nguyen's AI Education Initiative
Nguyen is a lecturer in Varna Free University’s Artificial Intelligence in Education project, which runs until October 25. The programme involves 120 specialists and students, focusing on the practical use and ethical challenges of AI in education. With over ten years of IT experience and a background in ethical hacking, Nguyen brings expertise in integrating AI into teaching.
