site.btaBGN 300,000 Worth of Marijuana Found at Lesovo Border Checkpoint

Nearly 19 kilograms of marijuana in methane gas bottles were discovered by customs and border officials at the Lesovo checkpoint near the border with the Republic of Turkiye, the Customs Agency reported. The value of the shipment amounted to about BGN 300,000.

The hidden marijuana was found during an inspection of a car with Bulgarian registration, driven by a Bulgarian citizen with the initials A.M. The driver was traveling alone. He was detained for up to 72 hours, said the District Prosecutor's Office in Yambol. 

On October 14, customs officials selected the vehicle for a thorough inspection, during which they discovered three factory-made methane gas cylinders placed under the rear seats. They contained a total of 39 vacuumed packages with dry grassy mass, which, the field drug test determined to be marijuana.

The confiscated marijuana has a total gross weight of 18,626 kg, customs officials added. Pre-trial proceedings have been initiated under the supervision of the District Prosecutor's Office in Yambol.
