On the occasion of their professional holiday, September 14, firefighters in Sofia held a water ceremony and payed tribute to the memory of their fallen colleagues on Friday. The ceremony was held a day earlier at the Directorate General (DG) Fire Safety and Civil Protection in the capital. Wreaths and flowers were laid in front of the memorial plaque of the fallen firefighters and rescuers.
The ceremony was attended by National Assembly Chair Raya Nazaryan, caretaker Health Minister Galya Kondeva, Deputy Interior Minister Tony Todorov, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Stoyan Andonov, Chief Commissioner Nikolay Dzhartov, Director of DG Fire Safety and Civil Protection, and other representatives of the professional leadership of the Interior Ministry.
Chief Commissioner Dzhartov said that this is the end of a summer filled with grave and complex challenges, which the firefighters overcame in the best possible way. In his words, this year was harder than 2023; there were large fires in inaccessible areas amid high temperatures, high vegetation, and strong wind. He recalled that firefighters do not only put out fires but also react daily to alerts related to disasters: rain, fallen trees, flooded sites, and other tasks.
In relation to this year’s professional holiday, a Fire Safety Week is being held that includes an Open Doors Day. “We are working a lot with children so that citizens and society can get acquainted with the nature of our profession,” the Chief Commissioner said.
A charity exhibition of children's drawings entitled "I Saw the Disaster With My Eyes" is on display in the DG's building, the funds from which will go to the families of law enforcement officers who have lost their lives or gotten injured in the line of duty.
The professional holiday of firefighters will be marked with various events across the country.
