Bulgarian rower Desislava Angelova advanced to the women's single sculls semi-finals at the Olympic Games in Paris on Tuesday.
In her Olympic debut, the 26-year-old took the quarter-final 2,000 m distance in 7:41.25 min, which was the third-best time in Heat 1. The rule is that the top three rowers in a quarter-final heat race go to the semi-finals.
Angelova was among the leading three from the beginning of the race and retained her position with a well-controlled performance till the end, thus earning a chance to compete for a podium spot.
Australia's Tara Rigney, bronze medallist from the two latest world rowing championships, won a compelling victory in the Heat 1 quarter-finals on 7:30.57 min. Another bronze medallist from the 2019 World Rowing Championships, Kara Kohler of the United States, came in second in 7:34.96 min.
