site.btaFilm Director Theodore Ushev to Receive 2024 Guttuso Award at ANIMAPHIX Festival in Italy
The 10th ANIMAPHIX International Animated Film Festival in Sicily will dedicate a special retrospective to Bulgarian Theodore Ushev, who will receive the 2024 Guttuso Award on July 22, according to the event’s website.
Ushev will be honored for his overall body of work and his contribution to the development of animated film.
With his constant search for new forms of expression and his curiosity about the world in all its aspects, the Bulgarian/Canadian Oscar-nominated film director Theodore Ushev has established himself as one of the leading figures of 21st-century animation cinema, the website reads.
The retrospective offers a comprehensive overview of Ushev's work and the innovations that have defined his career. It will feature almost all the films he has made in a quarter of a century, from "Tower Bawher" (2005) through "Drux Flux" (2008) and "Gloria Victoria" (2012) to the Oscar-nominated animated short "Blind Vaysha" and "The Physics of Sorrow", which was shortlisted for an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film and is considered one of the highlights of Ushev's career.
"Blind Vaysha" and "The Physics of Sorrow" are both based on writer Georgi Gospodinov’s works of the same names.
Bulgarian-born Ushev, who currently lives in Montreal, Canada, is world-renowned for his signature style, which draws on a range of influences from the visual arts and literature.
His creative portfolio includes more than 15 films that have brought him more than 200 international awards.
