The Balkans are attracting an increasing number of medical tourists, with Turkiye being the undisputed leader among the 10 most preferred countries for medical travel, according to data revealed by the jury of the 9th Balkan Medical Awards 2024.

The awards will be presented at a ceremony mottoed "Prevention is Better than Cure" at Hyatt Regency Sofia on July 5. The organizers are Global Media, part of the international platform Global Leaders.

Bulgaria reaches the average level of countries in the region, with some 50,000 medical tourists per year. Foreign platforms promoting Bulgarian medicine highlight the large number of medical facilities in the country, which is the highest per capita in the European Union. The data show that the healthcare services in highest demand in Bulgaria are dental procedures and cosmetic surgery.

Partners of the event include the National Patients' Organization, the Center for the Protection of Rights in Health Care, the National Association of General Practitioners, the National Union of Private Hospitals, and the Bulgarian Association of Health Care Professionals, among others.
