The State will allocate more than BGN 4.5 million to universities and research organizations to increase their publications in prestigious international journals, the Government Information Service said on Wednesday.

The funding is intended for the implementation of the third phase of a national programme designed to encourage publications in reputable international scientific journals and promote open access to scientific information. The programme was adopted by the government in October 2021 and is implemented in three phases over 42 months. The idea is to encourage Bulgarian universities and scientific organizations to publish more papers in international scientific journals, which will improve their international scientific rankings and will increase Bulgarian scientists' commitment to the Open Science initiative and its adoption as a standard practice by the research community.

Researchers will receive extra remuneration, awards, or other financial incentives for authoring scientific publications in journals that are refereed or indexed in the global databases Web of Science and Scopus. The scientific results in the publications should be accessible in the Bulgarian Portal for Open Science and in institutional or international repositories.
