Bulgaria's Finance Minister Lyudmila Petkova has assumed the rotating chairmanship of the Board of Governors of the European Investment (EIB), the Finance Ministry said Friday.

She assumed the position during the annual meeting of the EIB in Luxembourg. She will be in this office for a period of one year.

Petkova said that the EIB will continue to provide financing in support of key priorities - both within and outside the EU. "The EIB Group has a crucial role to play in supporting green and digital transition, cohesion and the regions most affected by the invasion of Ukraine," she said, adding that the Bank will rely on its expertise and sustained capital performance to maintain its leading role and address the challenges ahead.

As Chair, Lyudmila Petkova will coordinate the work of the Board and chair the Governors' meetings, have the right to convene meetings of the Board on her own initiative, at the request of any of the other Governors or the Bank's President, and propose decisions for a vote.

The EIB Board of Governors is made up of ministers appointed by each of the 27 member states, usually finance ministers, the EIB website says. It lays down credit policy guidelines, approves the annual accounts and balance sheet, and decides on the Bank’s participation in financing operations outside the European Union as well as on capital increases. It also appoints the members of the Board of Directors, the Management Committee and the Audit Committee.
