"'War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength'. These quotations from the immortal Orwell sound so topically relevant as if they were written for this advertisement, for the election results and for everything else," Vazrazhdane leader Kostadin Kostadinov wrote in a Facebook post, quoted by his party press centre on Thursday.

Kostadinov's comment was prompted by an advertisement of NATO that he saw on "one of the so-called national televisions," he explained. According to that advertisement, "20 years ago Bulgaria opted for freedom by joining NATO. Some freedom, given that you have not the right to leave NATO during the first 20 years even if you want to," the Vazrazhdane leader pointed out.

"The most disgusting thing, however, is that while we are sinking into the abyss of the Orwellian world, we continue to hear that we are not sinking but surfacing. Therefore, let me paraphrase Orwell: 'Devastation is progress. Degradation is advancement. Becoming brutal is becoming wise.' This is Bulgaria of the last 35 years," Kostadinov commented.
