Two illegal attempts to take a total of 62 migrants across Danube Bridge 2 from Vidin in Bulgaria to Calafat in Romania have been foiled by the Bulgarian border authorities over the last couple of days, the Sofia Appellate Prosecution Office reported on Thursday. The Vidin Regional Prosecution Office is investigating the cases.
Thirty-three of the migrants, including 12 under-18s, were found on May 14 hiding in a secret compartment in a Lithuanian-registered truck with a trailer which was transporting sacks of mulch. They said they are from Syria.
Criminal charges were brought against the adult members of the group and the Lithuanian driver. The driver was taken into 72-hour custody. A court is to order measures of restraint against the detainees.
The other attempt was detected on May 15 and also involved a truck with a trailer. The group comprised 29 migrants, including seven youths aged under 18, and the driver was a Turkish national. The adult migrants face charges. They were taken into 72-hour custody.
