Customs officers seized 6,496 packs of cigarettes during an inspection of a truck at Danube Bridge 2 on the Bulgarian-Romanian border, the Customs Agency reported Friday. 

According to documents, the truck was carrying foodstuffs for Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium. Among the goods transported in the cargo hold, for which regular documents were presented, customs inspectors noticed various types of boxes. Upon opening them, they found cigarettes bearing Bulgarian excise duty labels.

The driver of the truck, a Bulgarian citizen, stated that the cigarettes were his and he was transporting them for friends. He did not produce the documents required by law. 

The excise goods were seized issued a fine.

Since the beginning of the year, a total of 42,764 packs of smuggled cigarettes have been seized in 15 cases at the Danube Bridge 2, according to information on the customs agency's website.
