An exhibition will pay tribute to Bulgarian painter Mitko Panayotov on the 90th anniversary of his birth. The exhibition will be on display at the Union of Bulgarian Artists (UBA) from March 21 to April 12, the organizers said.
Panayotov passed away 30 years ago on the eve of his solo exhibition intended to mark his 60th birthday.
"Mitko Panayotov showed relatively little and exhibited even less, as if he were anxious to take up space in the hall. His paintings, dense, rich, and self-reflective, were more a state of mind than a determination of nature. His art seemed to be a glimpse of dusk, when everything becomes still, mysterious, and elusive," artist and art collector Svetlin Rusev said back in 1994.
Panayotov (1934 - 1994) was born in the western town of Pernik. In 1959, he graduated in painting from the Academy of Arts in Sofia, where he studied under professors Nenko Balkanski, Boyan Petrov, Ilia Petrov, and Dechko Uzunov. After his graduation, he regularly participated in numerous exhibitions in Bulgaria and abroad.
