A total of BGN 1 million will be invested in training unemployed and employed persons until 2027, Labour and Social Policy Minister Ivanka Shalapatova said here on Tuesday, specifying that 830,000 people are expected to be trained. She was speaking at a forum in Sofia on the skills of the future in connection with Bulgaria's bid for OECD membership.

These financial resources will cover access to training, acquisition and upgrade of qualifications, thus reducing the imbalance between demand and supply on the labour market, she went on to say. The project on the provision of training on digital skills and the creation of a training platform for adults was delayed by two years. The initiative was launched on December 21.

In 2024 alone, 200,000 unemployed and employed persons will undergo training on basic or average digital skills. The measure is planned to cover up to 500,000 people by mid-2026.  Until 2026, a total of 100,000 unemployed and employed persons will be given the opportunity to apply directly for an exam and certify their digital skills, Shalapatova said.

She noted the low unemployment level - 5.6% - in December 2023, adding that one should look at the facts in their complexity and interpret them properly. More than 60% of employers in Bulgaria say they have difficulties when seeking workers with the specific competences needed by the companies, shows a survey conducted by the Labour Ministry through the National Employment Agency.

There has been an increase by BGN 15 million in resources  for active policies on the labour market this year. The focus on vulnerable groups and their activation on the labour market is a priority of the Labour Ministry, Shalapatova also said. She described as the task an analysis of the pension system.
