Italian artist Raul, who was in Bulgaria for the opening of his exhibition “Onirico” in Sofia on Wednesday, said he would be happy if Bulgarians simply enjoy his way of self-expression. The exhibition, featuring 14 paintings, posters, and four masks, is on until February 23 at Oborishte 5 Gallery and Hall.

This was Raul’s first visit to Bulgaria. “I am very, very happy that I see a similarity in your language and some of the symbols,” he said. He added that he likes to travel and immerse himself in the culture, energy, and vibrations of various places. His paintings contain a mixture of symbols from various cultures. “Every symbol can mean something difference, it has a different message and significance. By writing these symbols, I create poetry. Symbols can bring people good energy, good vibrations,” Raul noted.

He avoids interpreting his own paintings; he wishes everyone to find their own interpretation and meaning in his art. “Through the power of thought, everyone can interpret them. And everyone can dream. Dream and interpret,” he called on the audience.

He explained that the masks featured in the exhibition are primitive heroes who can come to us bringing various messages. “Their power lies in bringing us thoughts about ourselves, the world, ancient times, our days in the future. They are like messages,” Raul said.

The message he wishes to give the audience through his art is that everyone should express themselves “always, in everything, in all arts”.

Raul was born in 1980 in Pescara, Italy. He lives and works between Europe and the USA. He travels the world studying different cultures in a constant exploration of symbolic languages, energy and meanings which he then conveys to his audience through his art. Symbols are the key element in his work. He has collaborated all over the world, painting murals in Miami's art district, Wynwood, and Los Angeles’ Cadillacs, and doing shoe collaborations with the high fashion brand Geox in Italy.
