The Council of Ministers Wednesday approved the 2022 Report on the implementation of the National Strategy for demographic development of the Republic of Bulgaria 2012-2030, the Government Information Service reported. One of the main highlights of the document is the support for families and children.

In 2022, monthly childcare allowances were paid to 456,491 children on average per month until the completion of secondary education. More than 102,000 people received maternity benefits under the Social Security Code, totalling more than BGN 554 million. One-off aid for pupils in the first and eighth grades was paid to the families of nearly 100,000 children.

In 2022, the annual total income per person of household averaged BGN 9,008, a 16.9% increase compared to 2021. Between 2013 and 2022, the total income per person in a household increased 1.9 times.

As of December 31, 2022, Bulgaria's population was 6,447,710 people, registering a decrease of 34,774 people year-on-year.

The report contains information on the measures and activities implemented to promote childbirth rates by creating a favourable environment for raising and educating children, improving reproductive health and the general health of the population. The report also includes information on the implementation of measures to reduce total, premature, infant and maternal mortality, to ensure employment and reduce poverty, and to adapt social systems to demographic change and population ageing.

The document has been developed within the framework of an inter-ministerial working group on demographic issues under the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy with participation of state institutions, the National Statistical Institute, the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, social partners, the National Association of the Municipalities in Republic of Bulgaria, the Bulgarian Red Cross.
