In 2022, the highest average gross monthly salary of a hired person in Bulgaria - BGN 3,398 - was received in Chelopech Municipality (Western Bulgaria), the Institute for Market Economics said Wednesday. In 2021, Chelopech again topped the list with a salary of BGN 2,930. Next in 2022 came Kozloduy Municipality (on the Danube) with a salary of BGN 2,949 and Knezha Municipality (North Central Bulgaria) with BGN 2,813.

The other municipalities in the top ten are: Sofia (BGN 2,475), Radnevo (BGN 2,450), Pirdop (BGN 2,440), Galabovo (BGN 2,260), Devnya (BGN 2,156), Panagyurishte (BGN 2,050), and Bozhurishte (BGN 1,925). The small municipalities on the list are the bases of operation of leading companies in the mining and quarrying industry, energy, agriculture, and processing of oil-bearing cultures.

Among the big regional centres, the highest average salaries were paid in the municipalities of Sofia (BGN 2,475), Varna (BGN 1,642), and Plovdiv (BGN 1,584), ranking in 4th, 17th, and 22nd place, respectively.

The positive processes from the last years have led to an increase in the average salary in every municipality in Bulgaria in the 2018-2022 period, the Institute for Market Economics said. In 215 municipalities, the employees' average salary grew by 40% to 70% in four years. In the municipalities of Sofia, Plovdiv, and Varna, the increase exceeded 50% in that period. The biggest increase was observed in municipalities that were not among the leaders for salaries but that in the last years attracted new investment or saw existing companies expand and improve their financial results: Knezha, Breznik, and Kuklen. A significant growth in salaries was also registered in the Krumovgrad area (Southern Bulgaria).
