Interior Minister: DUI Deaths Should Be Treated As Intentional Homicide

Causing death while driving under the influence, on a pedestrian crossing or while speeding should be treated as intentional homicide, said Interior Minister Kalin Stoyanov on Sunday. He attended the inauguration of a foundation, Angels on the Road, which brings together parents who have lost their children in road accidents.
In these eight-nine months the Interior Ministry is making small but sure steps on the road to victory with the war on the roads, Stoyanov said, adding that many ministries and institutions are responsible for what is happening on the roads.

The Interior Minister has tightened control on the roads. Stoyanov said the vehicle impounding measure is working. He noted that it is very important to collect the fines and that the system for electronic delivery of tickets and fines is also effective. In the last four years there have been 2,300 traffic accidents in Sofia in which moderate or severe bodily injury or death has occurred, said Deputy Sofia City Prosecutor Hristo Krastev.

Next week, the Sofia City Prosecution will send an open letter to the Interior Ministry, the Justice Ministry, the parliamentary committee on legal affairs and the Angels on the Road Foundation with proposals for legislative changes to help speed up criminal proceedings, the aim of which is to impose punishment as quickly as possible, Krastev added.

"We are working on concrete measures related to road infrastructure - lighting, markings, sleeping policemen around schools and kindergartens, as well as installing more cameras and integrating them with the system of the Interior Ministry," said Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev.

Attending the inauguration were representatives of the judiciary, MPs, MEPs, mayors, journalists and members of the public.
