The Turkish border city of Edirne has prepared to welcome hundreds of Bulgarian citizens who are expected to spend the New Year holidays in the city. The streets are festive, with Christmas decorations. Dozens of restaurants and hotels in the city have prepared programmes with popular Bulgarian songs and music, some have even included typical Bulgarian dishes in their menus.
According to information from Ihlas Haber Agency, reservations in hotels and restaurants in the city for the New Year's holidays were almost at 100% capacity, mainly by Bulgarian citizens. Many have made their reservations several months in advance.
In recent times, it has become a tradition for many Bulgarian citizens, in addition to visiting for shopping purposes, to celebrate holidays such as New Year's Day and Easter in Edrine, explained Mehmet Sayar from the Edirne merchants' association.
Edirne Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chair Recep Zipkinkurt said that Bulgarians make up about 90% of the customers who come to the city en masse for the market throughout the year. On Fridays and Saturdays, Edirne overflows with Bulgarians who shop for everything, he added.
Recently, Turkiye allowed Bulgarians to pass through the Bulgarian-Turkish border with only ID cards, which has made these trips even more convenient.
