"Our alert system would be triggered if there is a rise in radiation in Romania. We would already know if there was cause for alarm," Mihai Dragan, spokesperson for Romania's Environment, Water and Forestry Ministry, told BTA on Sunday.

He responded to BTA's question whether the ministry had received information about a rise in radiation at one of the control points in Romania - the one located at the Gighera station opposite Kozloduy NPP. Dragan told BTA that in Romania it is the National Environmental Protection Agency that monitors the radiation background.

According to the latest information published on the institution's official website on November 24 (Friday), Romania's environmental radioactivity level is within normal limits.

Gighera is a municipality in Dolj County in Oltenia, Romania. Its population is 3,405. It consists of three villages, Dighera, Nedeia, and Zaval.

Earlier on Sunday, the European Commission's radioactivity monitoring website published a map showing that there is an increase in the radiation background at one location in Romania.
