A renovated railway station in Stara Zagora (Southern Bulgaria) was officially opened on Tuesday. The station complex has been fully refurbished. An overhaul has been carried out in the reception area, the space around the station, the underpasses and the platforms.

The installations and systems were upgraded, and the energy efficiency of the building was increased, creating a comfortable environment for citizens. The station currently has four lifts, which will enable people with reduced mobility to access all levels of the building.

"It is very important to note that rail transport has huge potential. We must exploit it by any means necessary in order to ensure a modern, quality and efficient service for all passengers in Bulgaria," Transport Minister Georgi Gvozdeikov said at the opening ceremony.

The renovation started in July 2020 as part of the Reconstruction of Stara Zagora and Nova Zagora Railway Station Complexes project funded by the Operational Programme Transport and Transport Infrastructure 2014-2020. The cost of the project was some BGN 10 million.

The railway station's reception building was designed in the 1970s and became operational in 1982. Since then, no major renovation has been carried out.
