1444: Crusaders led by Wladislaw III Jagiello, King of Poland and Hungary, and military commander John Hunyadi are defeated by Sultan Murad II's army at Battle of Varna.

1917: Faculty of Medicine at St Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia is established.

1947: Bulgaria's National Operetta Theatre stages first performance.

1989: Todor Zhivkov is dismissed as Secretary General of Central Committee of Bulgarian Communist Party. Bulgaria embarks on transition to democracy after 45-year-long totalitarian regime.

1996: Bulgarian-German Forum established in Bonn, Germany.

1999: Bulgarian Euro-Left is granted observer status in Socialist International.

2006: Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) receives Chernorizets Hrabur Grand Prix for 2006 for contribution to journalism.
