Commenting on the information of two persons with Bulgarian descent taken hostage by Hamas, Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov Tuesday told the media that the Bulgarian government is assisting the Israeli authorities as much as possible so that they can negotiate and seek opportunities for a positive development of the situation. He was speaking during the Powers Summit 2023 in Sofia, a day after he returned from a one-day visit to Israel.
"They are of Bulgarian descent. Their grandparents lived in Bulgaria and then left for Israel," he added.
"Everything that needed to be done and could be done has already been done," Denkov said.
The Prime Minister said that what is currently happening is a huge human tragedy on both sides, with many people killed and kidnapped. “It all started with the barbaric Hamas terrorist attack," he pointed out, and called for a peaceful solution to the conflict.
"The right formula has not been worked out for decades. The greatest minds in diplomacy are currently trying to find a solution that will lead to lasting peace," Denkov said.
He recalled that a new Israeli ambassador to Bulgaria and a new Bulgarian ambassador to Israel have recently taken office. The Prime Minister said that he had conferred with both. They discussed topics such as the link between science, innovation and business that Israel has built, and the country's experience in agriculture, which it is successfully developing in a difficult climate. "Both of these topics have been overshadowed by the topic of terror, but we will get back to them at the earliest opportunity," Denkov said.
