A memorial plaque in his honour was unveiled in the native village of General Dimitar Metetelov - Zarya in the Bilhorod-Dnistrovs'kyi district.

The event was dedicated to the 164th anniversary of General Metetelov's birth. The memorial plaque was installed on the facade of the house where the general was born. To this day his descendants live there - the children of his eldest brother Ilia.

The event is of cultural and historical significance both for the village of Zarya and for the Bulgarian community in Bessarabia.

"Today's event is an important contribution to our historical memory," said Victoria Raicheva, chair of the Sarat community, in her address.

Welcoming those gathered at the event, MP of Ukraine and chair of the Association of Bulgarians in Ukraine Anton Kisse stressed the important contribution to the historical memory of Bessarabian Bulgarians.

Director of the local farm "Druzhba" Georgy Chiklikchi, who sponsored the publication of a book on the life and activities of Dimitar Metetelov, said that Friday’s event is a logical conclusion of the efforts to preserve the memory of the distinguished fellow villager.

"Dimitar Grigorov Metetelov (24.10.1859 - 17.08.1932). In this house in the family of Metetelov was born a Bulgarian officer, Major General and military lawyer. He participated in three wars: the Serbo-Bulgarian War (1885), the Balkan War (1912-1913) and the Inter-Union War (1913). President of the Ruse, Sofia and Plovdiv Military Courts, Head of the Military Judicial Unit and Chief Military Prosecutor of Bulgaria," reads the plaque in Bulgarian and Ukrainian.
