Meeting with representatives of Reporters Without Borders in Brussels on Thursday, Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov said that the main problem in Bulgaria is misinformation and not the lack of freedom of speech, as there has been significant progress in this respect in the last couple of years. In his words, standards for checking news credibility need to be established. "Apart from changes in Bulgarian laws, European legislation can help us a lot in this respect," Denkov added.

The PM underlined the government's efforts to ensure transparency of media ownership, freedom of expression of journalists and credibility of information. An example of this is the adoption of amendments to the Public Procurement Act, drafted to implement the recommendations of the European Commission's latest annual reports on the rule of law in Bulgaria. A working group of experts to the Justice Ministry has also been set up to draft regulatory changes in line with European and global media standards.

Denkov and the representatives of Reporters Without Borders agreed to establish a long-term partnership.

According to the Reporters Without Borders' 2023 global media freedom index, Bulgaria is ranked 71st out of 180 countries, climbing 41 places in the ranking for the past two years.
