General practitioners in Bulgaria numbered 3,854 and were the largest single category of physicians at the end of 2022, according to data on the ten most practised specialties released by the National Statistical Institute on Thursday. The total number of physicians was 29,599. Cardiologists were the second largest category (1,870), followed by ob/gyn specialists (1,756). Ophthalmologists and neurologists, 1,012 each, trailed the table.

October 19, the Day of St John of Rila the Miracle Worker, has been marked as the Day of the Bulgarian Doctor since 1996 by a decision of the Bulgarian Medical Association. Legend has it that St John of Rila performed many miracles and healings in his lifetime. He is the patron saint of the Bulgarian people.
